Alentejo 's capital , is a city with a long history . It is believed to have been founded around 400 BC by the Celts who named the Conistorgis . Was also inhabited by Carthaginians . The first references to Beja appear in reports of Polybius and Ptolemy in the second century BC
The Romans called it Pax Julia , and was one of 4 foreign ministries of Lusitania , created by Emperor Augustus. The importance of Beja is visible in the various Roman roads that run through the city .
After the fall of the Roman Empire the town was inhabited by Suevi , Alans and Visigoths latter having called the city by the name Paca .
Between the eighth century and the year 1162 , was under Arab domination when the name Beja arises . Curiously there is another city in Tunisia with the name Beja . In 1162 the Christians conquer definitely Beja . Received its first charter in 1524 .
Beja is currently the capital of the Alentejo with a population of about 22,000 inhabitants and one of the largest municipalities in the country with about 1150 km ² .
